Biophysicist and Program Manager – Future Industries at the Tom Farrell Institute for the Environment
Dr Gary Ellem is a sustainability futurist and entrepreneur working in the areas of energy, transport, food and regional industry development.
He has a PhD in Biophysics and has worked in both academia and industry as a senior scientist and strategic analyst. He holds IP and has published scientific research in fields as wide as digital wireless communications, microalgae photobioreactor design, high temperature thermal processing of biomass for biofuels, char slurry fuels, the low cost electrification of heavy rail using fast charge battery technology and global fossil fuel availability.
Dr Ellem was part of the Blueprint for a Low Carbon Hunter Valley project initiated by the NSW state government and founded the Hunter Valley Electric Vehicle Festival and Diamonds from Coal programs with the Tom Farrell Institute at the University of Newcastle. He was advisor on communications, community engagement and social license to the Australian Council of Learned Academies report on the potential for an Australian shale gas sector commissioned by the Federal Government and co-wrote their background briefing report.
He is a keynote speaker at mining, sustainable cities and transport conferences and is a writer on energy and sustainability for The Conversation. He has recently co-founded Social Business Pty Ltd which provides a cutting edge range of digital products, training and advice to help businesses drive employee engagement, open new markets, develop and de-risk new products and meet regulatory compliance.
